Tropical-storm gusts break the seal strip under shingle tabs, then fold them back. Even if the tab lays flat again, a crease across it lets water in. Replacement — not a dab of sealant — is the proper repair.
Older shingles become brittle in Texas heat and can crack when lifted, which is why roofers sometimes recommend a larger repair section or a replacement instead.
